Thompson, Vernon Ray.  “A History of the Education of the Lumbee Indians of Robeson County, North Carolina, 1885-1970.”  Diss.  U of Miami, 1973.

Annotation:

Explains the “half-century Dark Ages” (1835-1885), during which Lumbees lost their civil rights and could not attend public schools. Describes Lumbee efforts after 1868 to establish separate schools for their children rather than send them to Black schools. Discusses each of the six school districts; lack of Indian representation on the county board of education; and the 1970-71 upheavals when a desegregation plan was implemented. Recommends merging school districts and abolishing double-voting.
