Barry Nakell was charged with contempt of court by Superior Court Judge I. Beverly Lake for his conduct during Hatcher’s 1989 pretrial hearing on hostage-taking charges. Nakell appealed to the state Court of Appeals, which affirmed the lower court’s ruling. This article quotes from the lengthy opinion (see also 104 N.C. App. 638, 1991). A federal appeals court ruled that Nakell must complete his 10-day jail sentence (News and Observer 27 Feb. 1992: 3B).
