Johnson, Guy B. “A Survey of the Churches of Robeson County, North Carolina, 1948-1949.” Tentative compilation: 3 Oct. 1948. Revised introductory remarks: 20 Jan. 1950. 12 p. [Included in entry 468].
Churches were visited mainly during the summer of 1948. The survey found 216 churches (three townships were omitted). Estimates the Indian population at over 15,000. Of the Indian churches, 10.8% were Baptist and 6.4% Methodist. Notes a strong influence by Free Will Baptists, Pentecostal Holiness, and Church of God. Found that revivalism was important among the Indians, as was righteous living. Provides a checklist of churches, arranged by township, which gives name, denomination, and race of each church.
