Annotation:

Lumbee Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett now says he isn't going anywhere. Swett  sent a letter to the Tribal Council on Friday, May 13, 2011, stating he was resigning for health reasons.

In another letter to Lumbee Tribal Council Speaker Steve Sampson, dated May 17, 2011, Swett vowed to stay in office indefinitely. Swett said that he never resigned his leadership position and was only suggesting a possible resignation.

“I shall resign my position as tribal chairman of the Lumbee Indian Tribe of North Carolina as of noon, Monday, May 23, 2011,” the May 13 letter reads.

Swett concludes the new letter, dated May 17, 2011, as follows: "Again, this is an official notice that it is not my intent to resign my elected office at this time. As long as my health conditions allow me to be productive, I am committed to assisting the members of the Tribal Council in restoring the confidence and the support of the tribal members in our commitment to quality programs and services."
