Jenkins, Venita. “Lumbees set date with Senate panel.” Fayetteville Observer September 4, 2003.
Notes that the Eastern Band of the Cherokee has not been invited to testify at the September 17 hearing on the Senate bill for Lumbee federal recognition. Representative Charles Taylor introduced a bill in March that would require the Lumbee to seek federal recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs petition process. Wilson Pipestem, a lobbyist for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee, remarks that Taylor’s bill has bipartisan support.
