Annotation:

A hearing on S. 660, a bill introduced by Senator Elizabeth Dole, R-NC, will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 9:30 a.m. in the U. S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. The bill would grant full federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe. Most members of the Lumbee Tribal Council are expected to attend. It is also expected that Senator Dole, U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre, and Tribal Council Chairperson Jimmy Goins will testify. After the hearing, the Senate committee will vote on whether to send the bill to the full Senate.

This article also announces that the Lumbee Tribal Council voted 10-5 to set up a line of credit to pay outstanding debts, including fees owed to lobbyist Paul Kavinoky, Managing Director of the firm Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal LLP, who has been working for the tribe on federal recognition since May, 2004. The tribe pays him $5,000 per month and currently owes him $16,000. The tribe plans to mortgage its Hayes Pond property (the site of the 1958 routing of the Ku Klux Klan) to establish a $100,000 line of credit. The 660-acre property was appraised at $668,000.
