Lumbee musician Willie French Lowery died at age 68. Lowery wrote, performed and produced songs, and he was also a community activist in his home area of Robeson County.

Throughout his career, Lowery published over 500 songs and received many honors including a Lumbee lifetime achievement award in 2006. He was also featured in Southern Cultures magazine in 2008. Paul McCartney of The Beatles also noted he had respect for Lowery’s music
