Martin Brooks was born in Michigan, where he graduated from the University of Michigan. His family moved to Pembroke in 1958, where he set up a medical practice. He was the second ever American Indian physician practicing in North Carolina. Brooks was known for “knocking down racial barriers that existed in Robeson County” (par. 9). Brooks leaves a rich legacy of caring in Robeson County.
