Shiles, Bob. “No sale on Hayes Mill Pond.” Laurinburg Exchange [Laurinburg, NC] April 9, 2015.
This article discusses the conflict over selling the Lumbee owned Hayes Mill Pond and how the decision to not sell the property was reached. It was decided that before the property could be sold, the exact size of the property must be determined as well as its value to Lumbee history and current members of the tribe. Hayes Mill Pond does have some historic weight; in 1958, this was the location that Lumbee members ran the Ku Klux Klan out of Robeson County. There are many opinions circling around about what to do with the property, but the decision has been postponed until more information can be gathered.
