Annotation:

Governor Roy Cooper requested in a letter to North Carolina’ congressional delegation that they band together to support federal recognition for the Lumbee tribe. US Representative Robert Pittenger says, “'I’m working hard with our congressional delegation and leadership to move Lumbee recognition forward…. We are looking for a way to move forward. We are looking at all of our options’” (para. 3). Pittenger says there are still some people who oppose federal recognition. Harvey Godwin Jr, the tribe’s chairman, says recognition would help the Lumbee as well as Roberson County as a whole. Federal recognition would mean more federal funding for the tribe.
