Annotation:

A gallery of 15 photos showing how a Maryland Indian named Philip S. Proctor helped the Lumbee to embrace its culture. Proctor claimed “They did not know what it really meant to be Indian. They had no language and no culture.”

While some argue the validity of his statement, it demonstrated that the Lumbee were viewed differently than other native groups. The Lumbee are an amalgamation of several tribes and traditions who banded together around English and Christianity as common factors to create new communities.

Malinda Maynor Lowery said a lot of original languages and practices were lost in that process.
