Governor Pat McCrory stated that longtime Lumbee educator Ruth Revels, who taught McCrory at Ragsdale High School and passed away March 14, 2016, inspired his plan to increase teacher pay statewide.

McCrory said he hopes to raise the average pay for teachers to $50,000 plus benefits. North Carolina teachers would receive a five percent pay increase costing about $250 million a year plus bonuses.

There are also plans to use $2 million to fund 300 scholarships for aspiring math and science teachers. Along with that, the plan includes $5 million to fund scholarships for K-12 students with disabilities and more funds for Wi-Fi and electronic textbooks.

McCrory also has budgeted for more taxpayer spending on mental health, the elderly, and children.
