Annotation: 

Helen Maynor Scheirbeck, Lumbee, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree during the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Spring Commencement.  Scheirbeck began fighting for her cause as an intern with the National Congress of American Indians in 1959.  She became Director of the Office of Indian Affairs in 1968.  Most recently she worked as a senior advisor with the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. Although she has held many positions over her career, "her work has always been about Indian Education."
