Digital Scholarship and Initiatives

This largely pictorial work with detailed captions begins with an introduction (pages 6-10) discussing the Town of Pembroke in relation to the Lumbee Indians and then provides some background information on UNC-Pembroke.

Chapters follow on:
     (1) “Local Faces.” Includes the Red Man's Lodge, c.1914, and around forty individuals, including Herbert Lowry, police chief or policeman for thirty years; Billy Lowry, from whom land was purchased to situate UNC-Pembroke; Ira Pate Lowry, longtime band director at UNC-Pembroke; Herman Dial, first Lumbee to chair the Robeson County Board of Commissioners; Adolph Dial, who had extensive business holdings in the Town of Pembroke, served two terms in the North Carolina legislature, and established the American Indian Studies program at UNC-Pembroke; Horace Locklear, first Lumbee admitted to the N.C. Bar Association; Gene Locklear, first Lumbee in major league baseball; Milton Hunt, Pembroke mayor since 1983; and Dexter Brooks, first Lumbee Superior County judge in Robeson County.
