Martin Luther Brooks, 88, has passed away after practicing medicine in Robeson County for more than 60 years. Brooks attended the University of Michigan and started his medical practice in Pembroke. Brooks is the longest practicing Lumbee doctor. Brooks fought Jim Crow laws, and he had the first desegregated waiting room in the county. “'Without a doubt, he is one of the most influential Lumbees of all time,’” says James Locklear (par. 10). Brooks was known for serving the Lumbee community and providing care regardless of race or ability to pay.
