The Lumbee Community Involvement and Engagement Committee was introduced at the Lumbee Tribal Council meeting on Thursday, August 19, 2016.

The committee, whose goal is to encourage tribal members to learn about important tribal issues and make their government more responsible and accountable to the people, is not a part of the tribal government.

Supporting governmental transparency and accountability, as well as other issues, the group will serve as a forum for tribal members to discuss issues among themselves, as well as means of communication to tribal council members and the chairman. The committee will be split up into a 21-person steering committee and eight work teams with four-to-five members per group.

Also in the meeting, the council heard about the negative impact the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline will have on Robeson County from Robie Goins, appointed councilman Alton Locklear to a term on the N.C. Indian Housing Authority and amended an ordinance about the time limit for a chairman to submit approval or veto a law.
