"UNC Pembroke, Lumbee Tribe make Riverside a cross-country site." Robesonian [Lumberton, NC] August 11, 2016.

Annotation:

The Riverside Golf Course, which is now part of the Lumbee Tribal Cultural Center, has become an attraction for high school and college cross country runners alike.

At the time that the article was written, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s cross country team can practice there and will eventually hold meets at the site. Both the men’s and women’s team can use the course.

Not only is the course for the college cross country teams, but it is open to other Lumbee members for walking and exercise. It is located on Terry Sanford Road in between Pembroke and Maxton.

Tribal members believe this represents a partnership between the university and the tribe, calling it a win-win situation. The golf course was originally developed as an alternative for Indians denied access to other courses.
