Annotation:

Lumbee gymnast Ashton Locklear is headed to Rio for the 2016 Olympics. She is currently in Texas training with the other members of the United States national team. While she is slated as an alternate, if she does compete, she would be the first Native American athlete to compete in gymnastics in an Olympic Games. Already in 2016, Locklear won gold in the uneven bars in the City of Jesolo Trophy competition and the Pacific Rim Championships. Throughout the years, Locklear’s family has been involved and with her every step of the way. Her mother commutes back and forth with her during the week and they visit her father on the weekends. They stay for free with another gymnastics friend during the week, and her mother works at the gym to offset costs. Despite an incredible amount of devotion and travel, Locklear and her family were able to attend the Lumbee Pow Wow in Pembroke this year.
