Annotation:

The Lumbee Tribe was one of 26 tribes across the nation to receive a grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. In total, $5.9 million were given in grants to the tribes. The Lumbee Tribe, which received $185,604 of the grant money, was the only tribe on the east coast to get one.

This grant was awarded to help veterans in danger of becoming homeless. This money will be put toward 20 Lumbee veterans and provide housing and supporting services on rental properties. In total, Robeson County is home to approximately 7,900 veterans, and 40 percent identify as part of the Lumbee Tribe.

Part of this grant will also allow the Veteran Affairs Department to provide case management and clinical services to the veterans. Nationwide, 500 veterans will benefit from the grants.

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program has helped 103,000 veterans since 2008. However, it has only been able to support Indian tribes since 2015.
