Houses are being gutted in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. Drywall, couches, towels and more are being thrown away with fear of mold in mind.

In total, 7,057 structures had floodwater damage, many having standing water for days. People are advised to wear boots and masks when entering homes and to throw away any food or medication that came into contact with flood water. The water can also lead to items becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Children should also be carefully monitored during clean-up activities.

Some Mayfair residents stayed back during the storms. They helped protect the neighborhood from looters. They earned the name “The Mayfair Militia.” Mayfair has moved farther along in the recovery process than most other neighborhoods to this point. Trash and soiled items have been moved to the curbs and cleaning services have lined the streets.

Neighbors from the North Carolina Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief program from Richmond County were on hand to help. Community members have also banded together to help one another after the incident.
