Citation:

Scheirbeck, Helen Maynor.  "Education, Public Policy and the American Indian."  Diss.  Virginia Polytechnic Institute, 1980.

Annotation:

This detailed, well-researched study discusses, among other things, the effects of federal, state and local government actions on Lumbee education. Scheirbeck concludes that “state sponsored education of Indians as illustrated by ... the Lumbees ... indicates a failure to achieve assimilation or cultural adjustment of the Indians into the dominant culture of that state.”  Appendix A is a bibliography.  Appendix E is a comprehensive “List of North Carolina Laws Affecting Public Education of Indians Not Living on Reservations.”  Appendix F is a very thorough “List of Significant Actions Regarding Lumbee Indians of North Carolina.”
