Annotation:

Lelia, a young Lumbee, leaves her abusive White husband Luther but allows her son, Gordon, to stay with Luther’s mother.  Gordon devises an ingenious scheme to get his mother to come home. Gordon also becomes friends with his maternal grandfather, who once led demonstrations for equal rights for Lumbees.  Gordon’s identity problems, due to his mixed-race background, are a major theme.
