McMillan, Hamilton.  Letter to O. M. McPherson, Special Indian Agent.  2 Aug. 1914.  Rpt. in McPherson (entry 49), Exhibit M, pp. 242-3.

Annotation:

McMillan discusses Croatan history and traditions, based on his 30 years of study.  He states, “… I have interviewed hundreds of them, and the inquiry as to their origin was, without exception, in favor of their being Cherokees.”  Washington Lowrie and other Croatans have lived among the Cherokees in Indian Territory.  The only Indian names among the Croatans (Lowrie, Lochlayah, Oxendine) are Cherokee.
