In the second meeting of the Lumbee Tribal Reform, the organization had many high-ranking members of the Lumbee tribe in attendance. The Reform’s mission statement concentrates on promoting tribal member involvement in tribal affairs.
At the meeting, the reputation of the tribe was discussed. It was said that many consider the Lumbee people to be “Culture Vultures,” as many believe that they borrow from Southwestern and Plains traditions. Despite these beliefs that the Lumbee customs are not genuine, the Lumbee Tribal Reform attributed the negative perception to poor communication.
The Reform also noted that the Lumbee people need to have a better understanding of the Lumbee Tribal Constitution. The Reform will meet up until the elections in November 2015 to better inform the Lumbee people. While the Reform will educate residents, it will not support any candidates for office. The next meeting of the Lumbee Tribal Reform will be on May 16, 2015.
