Stephens, Phillip. "Storm brings out our best [opinion column]." Robesonian [Lumberton, NC] October 18, 2016.

Annotation:

Stephens related what the town looked like after the floods to what third-world countries look like to military personnel overseas. However, he chose to focus on the positives and the heroics that were shown in the trying time.

From water rescue teams, to law enforcement to the ASPCA, people from all over the country helped in the effort. When a generator broke causing people to leave hospitals, patients made it through impassable roads to other area hospitals. Political ideologies didn’t matter. All of these and more, he says, contributed to many people being unsung heroes.

Even Lara Trump showed up to help with a large load of supplies sent by Donald Trump, though the county was mainly Democrat. Senate candidates suspended their campaigns to help out.

Stephens ended with this, “A disaster doesn’t develop character. It only reveals it. And though Robeson may be economically poor, its character is still rich through the worst of storms. Neighbors helping neighbors is more than a tagline.”
