Citation:

White, Paul. “Franklin man teaches ‘street’ karate.” The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA). October 11, 1992

Annotation:

Kenny Buffaloe, a first-degree black belt in Oyama karate, teaches the martial art form in Virginia to kids (as of 1992).

According to Buffaloe, his training comes directly from Grandmaster Shigeru Oyama, who he says is the world’s leading master in the area. Oyama karate is based on street techniques. Matches are scored by knockdowns instead of points, and tournaments are banned in the United States because they have been deemed too violent.

Buffaloe, who is a Lumbee Indian, teaches at the County Line Clubhouse. All it takes to sign up is show up Fridays at 6 p.m. A month’s worth of classes is only $30 per student.
