Lola Smith was forced out of her home after Hurricane Matthew damaged her apartment. Nine months later, she is moving back into her renovated apartment. There are still a few families living in hotels. Lumberton was hit hard due to the Lumber River flooding areas.

"Robeson County Manager Ricky Harris said he was heartbroken over the hurricane’s destruction. 'When the storm initially happened, it was impossible to go into some of these communities and see the damage unless you were in a helicopter. It was then I knew we were in for a long-time recovery process’” (para. 17-18). Many organizations have helped the counties rebuild, and the county is working to get more money to make repairs. The county also wants to protect Robeson County from future hurricanes. Smith comments that seeing her personal items back in her apartment is a feeling she can’t describe.
