Annotation:

Following fights between Lumbee and Black students, as well as a letter which called Blacks “the enemy,” some 50 Black Purnell Swett High School students may request transfers to another school. Most of the Black students live in Maxton. Purnell Swett High School has an enrollment of 1,456 students—1,200 Indian and most of the remainder Black. The transfers would require approval from the principal. School board chairperson Mike Smith maintains that the transfers would not help solve the problem.
