Annotation: 

Joseph Bruce Oxendine, who was born in 1930, has been involved with some form of sports or sports administration throughout his entire life.

Oxendine went to Catawba College, where he was named to the Charlotte Observer’s All-State postseason team his senior season and also earned All-Conference honors in baseball and basketball. He was presented with the Aycock Medal, an award given to the top scholar-athlete in each Catawba graduating class, when he graduated in 1952.

Throughout his career, he continued to be involved in all three sports. He played three seasons of professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates farm team and also coached high school football, high school basketball and American Legion baseball.

He then went on to become a professor of Physical Education at Temple University and served many other roles when he was there, including dean of the college of HPERD. Oxendine is also an author of multiple books. One of his most famous books documents over three decades of American Indian sports heritage. Oxendine also participated and supported many Native American issues and held sports workshops during tense times to ease the tension.
