Knick, Stanley. “Along the Robeson Trail (column).” Carolina Indian Voice 28 January 1999:2.

Annotation:

In this installment in a series of columns on the context of the Lumbee, Knick discusses the term “culture” and the widely held belief that everyone within a common culture will speak, act, think, and dress the same way. He points out the individuality that people within a culture will express and notes that culture has more to do with “the elements of [people's] lives which they learn and share on some sort of common basis.” Because Lumbee children are trained and cared for in ways that make them similar, it is very easy for one Lumbee to recognize another Lumbee by speech, appearance, or other behavior.
