This article discusses action by the Lumbee Tribal Council regarding the salary of deputy tribal administrator James Hardin. A motion was made to raise Hardin's salary by $48,000. His salary, in the fiscal year 2007 budget, had been cut from $88,920 to $40,000 because it was felt that several of his responsibilities overlapped with those of the tribal administrator and the housing director. The Tribal Council's vote on the motion was 8 to 8 (three Council members abstained), so the motion failed.

"Lumbee deputy tapped for new post." Fayetteville Observer Thursday, April 5, 2007.Publication type: Newspaper article This article announces that the Lumbee Tribe's Finance Committee has recommended changing deputy tribal administrator James Hardin's job title to planning and grants director. The change would also increase his salary by around $20,000, to $64,480. The change was requested by both the tribal chairman and the tribal administrator, who want the tribal staff to put more effort into raising unrestricted funds and becoming more self-sufficient. A motion for this change will probably be voted on during the Tribal Council's April 19 meeting. Some tribal council members oppose the change because the increased salary appears to reward Hardin for acting without authorization from the tribal council in submitting a proposal to the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs for a $25 tax on Lumbees who own land within the tribe's four-county territory. There is also criticism that the tribe's personnel and transition committee has not seen a job description for the revamped position, yet the tribal council is being asked to vote on both the job description, salary, and person to fill the position. The position had been mentioned as important as far back as two years ago, but it is not being advertised and a search conducted.Jenkins, Venita. "Lumbee council changes job pay." Fayetteville Observer Friday, April 20, 2007.Publication type: Newspaper article This article announces a vote by the Tribal Council on Thursday to change James Hardin's title from deputy tribal administrator to director of planning and grants and to increase his salary, under the new position, to $64,400. A resolution was made to give him $12,000 in back pay, but it did not pass. There was discussion of the fact that when Hardin's salary was reducted by the current budget resolution, Hardin's lower salary should have gone into effect Oct. 1; but in fact, his salary was not adjusted until mid-November.See also: Locklear, Mark.
