Annotation:

Four Tuscarora groups in and around Robeson County are seeking federal recognition. Two groups--the Tuscarora Nation East of the Mountains and the Tuscarora Tribe of North Carolina--are petitioning the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Tuscarora Nation of North Carolina and the Tuscarora Nation of Kau-ta-noh are meeting with U.S. senators and representatives to try to change the 1956 Lumbee Act so that all Indians in Robeson and adjoining counties are not considered Lumbee. The four Tuscarora groups, with approximately 3,000-5,000 members, are just beginning to talk to each other about pursuing federal recognition as one tribe.
