Annotation:

Harvey Godwin Jr. announced that he will enter the 2015 Lumbee tribal chairman race by taking out an advertisement in the July 26, 2015 edition of The Robesonian. The incumbent, Paul Brooks, is the only other candidate to legitimize his intent to run for office by holding public campaigns.

Godwin, 60, owns Two Hawk Employment Service in Lumberton, a business that he founded 20 years ago, and he has lived in the Moss Neck community his entire life. Godwin possesses a pre-law degree from his time at Pembroke State University. Previously, he has been a campaign manager when Julian Pierce was running for a Robeson County Superior Court judgeship in the late 1980’s.

Godwin also used to be the president of the Lumberton Rotary Club and a member of the board of directors for the Lumberton Area Chamber of Commerce. He is now the president of the Robeson Community College Foundation board of directors, while also being a member of the Lumber River Workforce Development Board.

Godwin stated that, if elected, because of his background, there will be less need to call in outside consultants because of expertise that he possesses. He also noted that the needs of military veterans in the tribe will be addressed if he wins the position.

Elections for Lumbee tribal chairman will be held November 17, 2015.
