Annotation:

Greensboro recently unveiled two murals of local Lumbees Madison Davenport and Tecumseh Jones. The idea for the murals came from Marty Kotis III, who attended a spring commencement ceremony at UNC-P and was inspired by the inclusion of the Lumbee ambassadors, Little Miss Lumbee, Junior Miss Lumbee, Teen Miss Lumbee, and Miss Lumbee leading the school officials  while an American Indian flutist performs. Kotis commissioned Australian street artist Matt Adnate, who”has always held a connection towards indigenous people of their native land” (para. 7).

The murals are part of the Tracks project, which was created in hopes of changing the area the murals are located into a street art and entertainment district.

Davenport is the current Miss Lumbee and she studies special education at UNC-P.  She performs at schools for Native American Heritage Month, saying “‘We travel so much every day to talk about [Lumbee] culture’” (para. 19). Jones is a construction worker and aspiring actor.
