UNC-Pembroke's enrollment last year was 3,445, and the school expects its largest freshman class this fall. An aggressive recruiting effort is being coordinated by Chancellor Allen Meadors, who would like to see the school's enrollment reach 6,000 students so that it can offer a wider range of programs. UNC-Pembroke, which received some of the UNC System's highest ratings in its senior survey last year, is advertising on radio, cable television, and billboards. It will launch an honors program this fall and is also sending brochures to students outside of Robeson County who identify themselves on the SAT as Native American.

UNC-Pembroke is one of seven campuses within the UNC System targeted by the system for significantly increased enrollment to accommodated the state's surge in college enrollment expected from the “baby boomlet.” UNC-P hopes to grow by 78%--to 6,140 students by 2010 and received extra state funding to increase marketing efforts and student services. The university hired a marketing consultant and increased its marketing budget from $75,000 in 1999 to $450,000 this year.
