Lorna McNeill, a 24-year-old Lumbee, is the first Native American Miss North Carolina. McNeill considers herself an ambassador for Lumbee people and culture. Her mother Hazel has stated, "The Lumbee people are wearing this crown, too." If she wins the Miss America contest on October 14, she will be the first Native American Miss America.
