Rentz, Page. “More than $1 million going to improve health of babies in Robeson County.” Fayobserver [Fayetteville, NC] September 8, 2014.
Because of the historically high rate of infant death and low birth weights, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is investing more than $1 million to keep babies healthy in Robeson County. The Robeson Health Care Corp. and University of North Carolina at Pembroke have each been awarded more than $500,000 through the Health Resources and Services Administration's Healthy Start program.
Dr. Thomas Maynor, deputy CEO of Robeson Health Care Corp., said his organization plans to provide prenatal care through the grant program with case management for the mother during her pregnancy and the following 18 months after, hoping to help women become healthy enough to sustain another pregnancy after.
With the extra money comes the ability to expand their program to be able to reach women and families in the more rural areas of Robeson County.
