Annotation:

On Wednesday, August 2, the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs approved S. 660 on a voice vote. Both Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr, the North Carolina Senators who cosponsored the bill, doubt that the bill will go before the full Senate this year. The Senate has only four weeks of meeting time left before it recesses for the November election. Senator Craig Thomas (R-WY) offered an amendment to S. 660 that "required the Lumbees to go through an expedited process for recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. His amendment failed on a 6-8 vote. Senator John McCain, chairperson of the committee, stated that the closeness of the vote on Thomas's proposed amendment indicated that Senators Dole and Burr must obtain more support for S. 660 before it comes to the full Senate.
